Philip may have been born at Bristol England, he was the son of John and Mary Galpin. He came to America prior to 1646, where court records show he was living in New Haven, Connecticut with his wife. Born probably between 1615-1620 and died 1684. He was a sailor, trader and fisherman. Eleven generations of descendants are given  The name Galpen may come from a small village in Belgium, also is more common in France than in England
