GOULD: The Goulds of Rhode Island 1875

  • 1600

By Rebecca Gould Mitchell

The Goulds of Rhode Island began in America when Jeremiah and Priscilla and their children came from England in 1637 and settled in Rhode Island. Jeremiah returned to England, and while there, he died. Their children were Daniel, Thomas and John. Daniel was the oldest son and was sixteen years old when coming to America. He married Wate, daughter of John Coggeshell - the first President of the colony- in 1651. He tells in his own words of how he and a band of about ten Quakers were wrongfully treated, whipped and imprisoned for several days - for no other cause than for being Quakers - this was in 1659.
