  • 2000

By Julia Edgar Thacher

This is the ancestral line of Captain Joshua Gray of Yarmouth, Massachusetts and his descendants. He was born January 22, 1743 in the town of North Yarmouth, Province of Massachusetts Bay - now Cumberland County, Maine. He was the son of Andrew and Phebe (Chandler) Gray and grandson of John and Susanna (Clark) Gray. When he was less than two years old his mother died and he was sent to live with his aunt and uncle, Thomas and Hannah Hallet. He was sent away because his father feared the Indians would steal his little son, for at the time the Indians were very hostile toward the people of this town. Joshua Gray was a prominent figure in the Revolution, he was among the body of people declaring their rights and liberties and a patriot in service. He commanded a militia at Yarmouth with enthusiasm.
