Among the most distinguished and well known in America was the noted author, soldier, lawyer, and statesman, Alexander Hamilton. He was born January 11, 1757 at Charlestown, island of Nevis, West Indies. His father was James, son of Alexander of Grange, Lanarkshire, Scotland. He was an orphan at the age of twelve and had a scant education.
