The Hamilton family of England, Scotland and Ireland, among the great families of distinction in the world in war and diplomacy, science, and literature, as nobles and commons among democracy. Among the most distinguished and well known in America was the noted author, soldier, lawyer, and statesman, Alexander Hamilton. He was born January 11, 1757 at Charlestown, island of Nevis, West Indies. His father was James, son of Alexander of Grange, Lanarkshire, Scotland. He was an orphan at the age of twelve and had a scant education.
