This is a genealogical account of the Hamilton family, showing the line and descendnts of Hugh Hamilton and his wife Margaret Dickson of York County, Penna. James, son of Hugh, enlisted in June 1780 in the Revolutionary War. He was taken prisoner in South Carolina, imprisoned on a prison ship at Charleston for a year, until July, 1781. After the close of the war he returned to York, Penna. He learned the gun smithing trade. He married Miss Martha Wallace of Chester County, Penna. They moved back to North Carolina. His family stayed there on the North Carolina farm after his death. The Hamilton family has origins in England, Scotland and Ireland, are among the great families of distinction in the world.  A most distinguished and well known in America was the noted author, soldier, lawyer, and statesman, Alexander Hamilton. He was born January 11, 1757 at Charlestown, island of Nevis, West Indies. His father was James, son of Alexander of Grange, Lanarkshire, Scotland.
