This narrative history of the Harding family begins with the author's grandparents, Walter and Anne (Gibbs) Harding with their children, coming to America from England in 1837. Included are several letters that give a glimpse into their lives, one is a copy of a letter written by Anne Harding to her parents in England, written on board the ship just before landing in New York. She describes the immense suffering they endured in their journey.
