The early origin of the surname Hind, Hinde, Hinds, from hyne or hine, means a tiller of the ground, or farmer.  This history and genealogy of the Hinds Family begins with the emigrant to America, James Hinds (Heynes, Haynes, Hindes), who landed in Salem as early as 1637. He married in 1638. Descendants are given to 1899.
