HOFFMAN: Some notes on the history of the Hoffman & Schermerhorn family in Canada 1922

  • 1600

By Emma Hoffman Bogart

Notes on the history of the Hoffman and Schermerhorn family in Canada, with genealogical records. The author expresses that as a child it was impressed upon her by her mother, that her Schermerhorn forefathers had suffered and endured much for loyalty to Great Britain. Jacob Janse Schermerhorn, born in 1622, was among the colonists who sailed from Holland to New York. He evidently prospered as a fur trader and in 1649 got into serious trouble by selling firearms to the Indians, which was a felony at that time. He was arrested with a sentence of banishment and confiscation of all his property. A short history of the Reed family is included.
