The ancient family of Holloway in England was seated in Middlesex County, at or shortly after the time of the Norman Conquest. There were several who landed at Jamestown, Virginia in 1607.  In 1880 is seen Dr. Robert Green Holloway and his wife Lilie (Amiss), married in 1865. He entered the Confederate Army at the outbreak of the Civil War and was made Examining Surgeon, among other titles. The Amiss family first appears in Virginia in 1678. They are of French origin, possibly Huguenots. The Leavell family were also of French origin, and were Huguenots who fled persecution.
