Our Holmes ancestors, being an ancient name and dating back to the time of William the Conqueror.  In America, the Dutch very early laid claim to New Jersey through the Explorations and discoveries of Hendrik Hudson in 1609 and Cornelius Hendrickson in 1614. Shortly after the establishment of New Amsterdam the Dutch settled across the Hudson River. Meanwhile the English laid claim to the land.  Obadiah Holmes was the immigrant to America, (1606-1682) from Manchester, England to Newport Rhode Island married Katharine Hyde. typescript.
