  • 7500

By William M. Emery

The Howland family were among the earliest pioneers who came to America. This is the fascinating story of the Howland ancestry, of Gideon Howland, the founder of a fortune, a famous will and heirs. This is the story of a family and a fortune and the inheritance of the trust that was established for Mrs. Hetty H. R. Green. Distribution of the million dollar residuary estate of Sylvia Ann Howland of New Bedford, Mass became effective in 1916 at the death of her niece, Mrs Hetty Green. Miss Howland died in 1865, gave her niece life interest in half of her property, and that it ultimately pass to the lineal descendants of the grandfather, Gideon. This exposed numerous descendants. Gideon had thirteen children. The author, Mr. Emery, is genealogist for the trustees.
