By Laura Jay Wells
The Jay family of LaRochelle and New York province and state is one that was affected by the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes which had been the Charter of Freedom of Protestants in France. When Louis XIV signed this Pierre Jay, a rich merchant of LaRochelle, with his wife and family, fled from France to England. His son, Auguste, a young merchant was at the time on a trading voyage near Africa, and upon returning to France found his parents and sisters fled and the Jay property confiscated. A relative hid him until he could set sail for America. In his new home he. found many of his fellow Huguenots.
