He was born in Connecticut in 1762, the son of John and Mary (Ward) Griswold. He enlisted in the Revolutionary War under Gen. Israel Putnam. He died in Long Island, New York during a battle when he caught a cold. He left a large family of children, the youngest being five years old. For many years the family held a family reunion at the New Land pasture, which was a portion of the Griswold Farm.
