GRISWOLD: The Ancestors and Descendants of Edward Griswold of New York (Softcover)
by Arthur Buell, Hervey DeWitt Griswold and Minnie Griswold Space
The Griswold family came from England to Connecticut about 1639, two brothers, Edward and Matthew, sons of George, and settled there as part of the early establishments were made. Edward served twice (1651 and 1662) on a jury in the trial of persons accused of witchcraft, and in both cases the accused persons were pronounced worthy of death. He was also appointed by the General Court to lay out some land near Saybrook, leaving Windsor for Killingworth. He served on numerous committees. He died in 1691. Matthew was his younger brother. These are the ancestors and descendants of Edward Griswold (of the fifth generation) of Dryden, New York. He was an industrious man, a 'teller of stories', jovial, and a soldier. He married Asenath Hurd in 1783 immediately after the close of the Revolutionary War. On October 3, 1832 Edward applied to Government for a pension on account of service in the war. The claim was allowed. Asenath also applied for a pension, and it was granted Sept 16, 1843, when she was 86 years old. This book provides eleven generations of descendants, to about 1929.
