John Reynolds, born around 1780, was one of the Reynolds brothers. He married Dolly Bennett in 1805 and had a son named J. J. Reynolds. John Reynolds took a timber claim in Horton Township, Iowa. He was a member of the Masonic society and later joined the Society of the Grand Army of the Republic.

John Reynolds appointed his son, J. J. Reynolds, as the executor of his will in 1911. The Reynolds family bible is currently in possession of Cleone Van Salus in Wisconsin. John Reynolds was not considered a politician in any sense, and he did not devote much time to campaigning. At the general election of October 9, 1883, there were six aspirants for the auditor's office, reflecting a time when men took chances at the polls without waiting for nomination.
