In the early days of the Plymouth colony, settlers faced numerous challenges, including Indian attacks and severe droughts. The Indians, while sparing some lives, pillaged houses and caused fear among the settlers. Instances of attacks in Brookfield in 1710 and 1692 led to chaos and loss of life, highlighting the constant threat faced by the early settlers.

Natural disasters, such as earthquakes in 1638 and 1727, added to the hardships endured by the Plymouth settlers. These events caused alarm and destruction, further testing the resilience of the community. Despite the adversities, the settlers persevered through harsh winters, food shortages, and the constant threat of attacks from wild tribes, showcasing their determination to survive in a challenging environment.

Survival in such conditions required constant vigilance, with settlers needing to go armed even during daily tasks and worship. The settlers had to keep a watchful eye day and night, always prepared for potential danger. Despite the risks, some individuals, like Elder Brewster, demonstrated patience and gratitude, setting an example of resilience and fortitude in the face of adversity.
