Rhode Island's natural environment is characterized by a lack of alpine species due to its elevation, while its coastal waters host diverse marine life, including sea anemones and sponges. Historically, the state demonstrated resistance to customs duties in 1787 and was notably absent from the Constitutional Convention, eventually ratifying the Constitution in 1790. The Dorr War of 1842 marked a significant change in governance by expanding suffrage, and the indigenous Niantics, under Ninigret's leadership, maintained peace with settlers during conflicts, while the state is also recognized for its mineral resources, including Westerly granite and unique coal deposits.
