CIVIL WAR: The Monitor and the Merrimac - Both Sides of the Story (Softcover)
by J L Worden, Lt Greene, and H Ashton Ramsay. 1912. 73p
The Merrimac, originally a war-frigate with auxiliary steam power, was converted into an ironclad by the Confederates after being raised and repaired. Commodore Buchanan ordered a ramming demonstration against the Federal ship Cumberland before heading to the historic battle in Hampton Roads. The Monitor, a famous ironclad that battled the Merrimac, tragically sank in heavy seas near Cape Hatteras, resulting in the loss of several crew members.
