GAUER - GOWER Family 1939
By Irene May Gower
The history of the Gower family dates back to the 10th century. They originated in England and are of Anglo-Saxon origin, being one of the oldest families in the county of York and Glamorganshire. There is information on the history of the Welsh twenty-eight mile Isle of Gower. In America, the earliest records indicate that Mrs. Anne Gower Endicott, wife of the first Governor of Massachusetts, came from England to America in 1628. Others coming to America include Johann Nickle Gauer, from Holland to Philadelphia in 1743. He settled in Berks County. We see deeds and wills, the will of Nicholas Gower of Northampton County, Penna in 1790.
