By Frederick Augustus Strong

These are the descendants of Edward Grannis, who was in New Haven, Connecticut, as early as 1649 and died there Dec. 10, 1719. Some members of the Grannis family refer to themselves as belonging to the 'North Haven Branch', descendants of John, while others claim to be of the 'East Haven Branch', descendants of Joseph. At a court held in New Haven CT on Oct. 2, 1649 young Edward Grannis, was "fined 18 d for want of Worme, Scourer and Flints." At the time all males from age sixteen were required to bear arms. He was fined for lacking proper implements for the care and operation of firearms. This law was passed in 1639 in New Haven County.
