HADLEY: Notes on the Quaker family of Hadley 1916
By Chalmers Hadley
The Hadley name is of ancient origin and this book gives reference to prominent Hadley family members in early history as well as when America was colonized. One early reference mentions Sir John Hadley in 1371 as he was arrested by the Kings orders and for the King's pleasure, delivered to the custody of Constable of the Tower of London. For what reason, perhaps as a result of trying to collect from his royal debtor. He was a member of the powerful Pepperers Guild. Upon his release from prison In 1379 he was elected Lord Mayor of London. He was reelected in 1393. This book focuses more on the Hadley Quaker family, when we learn of Simon Hadley ll emigrated from Ireland to Pennsylvania. Because of his repeated military activities, membership with Friends in Ireland difficult to maintain. His mother Catherine Hadley (d. 1710) seems to have been the first of the family to join the Society of Friends. Simon Hadley ll was born about 1675 and married Ruth. They came to Pennsylvania in 1712. The disturbed conditions in Ireland, the persecution of Quakers for refusal to pay tithes, take oaths, and more led them to Penna.
