HARGRAVE: Brief history of the Quakers in England and Virginia, and the Hargrave family, 1634-1939

  • 1600

By Harry S. Hargrave

From the Forward ; Obviously only persons with a fearless spirit could forsake their native land to combat the hardships and dangers of a new world. Of such were the members of the Society of Friennds , better known as the Quakers, who as our forefathers , for conscience sake and not for gain, were among the early colonists to take up life in the American wilds.  Provided in these pages is some of the intimate history, the daily life, beliefs, how the term Quaker came about, the life of George Fox, William Penn, and those associated  with the Quakers in England and America.  An account of the Hargrave family, from 1634-1939, begins with Richard Hargrave, born in England in 1614. The Quakers first came to America in 1656. Some colonies welcomed them while others persecuted them. Boston was the most cruel, where they were deported, imprisoned, and tortured.
