HEPBURN: Genealogy and History of the Hepburn family of the Susquehanna Valley, with reference To other families of the same name 1894
By John Meginness
The origin of the Hepburn family is Scotch, with antiquated roots, being traced back to 1200. This history and genealogy of the Hepburn family focuses on those who settled in areas of Pennsylvania. Brothers, James and William were prominent and representative men. William came from Ireland around 1773. James was settled in Philadelphia before coming to the West Branch area of the Susquehanna Valley, around the close of the Revolutionary War. James was involved in mercantile and real estate and William became a State Senator. They were involved in organizing Lycoming County and laying the foundation of what is now Williamsport, PA. Reference to other Hepburn families are discussed, such as three brothers, Patrick, James, and John, who settled in Connecticut at an early period in the history of New England. One of them was involved in a rebellion and fled Scotland about 1680. It is probable that it was what is known in history as the Oates Rebellion.
