HERR: Genealogical Record of Rev. Hans Herr and his direct lineal descendants, from his birth A.D. 1639 to the present
By Theodore W. Herr
This book is a genealogical record, with a brief historical introduction. Reverend Hans Herr and Elizabeth Kendig, and their direct lineal descendants are recorded to 1908. His birth was in Lampeter, PA on Sept 17, 1639 and he lived to 1725. In 1660 he married Elizabeth, daughter of John Kendig and Jane (Mylin). The Herr race is an ancient family, of noble origin. In 1850, as the obtaining of data started, visits were made to the Herr families' oldest residents of Lancaster, Dauphin, and Cumberland Counties and areas in Pennsylvania, where most of the descendants lived. Records in Philadelphia, Harrisburg, West Chester, and Lancaster, were examined. In Europe many Swiss, Germans and others were being relentlessly persecuted for religious beliefs about the close of the seventeenth century. Rulers changed frequently, and so did the dominant religion. The German and Swiss Mennonites being nonresistant, opposed bearing arms or going to war, disagreeing with those in power. The Edict of Nantes issued in 1598 in favor of the Huguenots was revoked in 1685, and one of the most cruel persecutions ever known to France, Switzerland, Germany etc took place. William Penn had secured the south eastern part of 'Pennsylvania' where many of these persecuted settlers could locate to. *Note - The Hans Herr House is a historical place of interest in present day Lancaster, PA
