By Martin M. Hester

This is the fascinating account of John Lawrence Hester (Hoerster, in Germany) who was born in Hanover, Germany about 1738. He and his wife Mary and three children emigrated to America in 1771. They sailed from Amsterdam to Philadelphia. Unable to pay for their passage of $300, he and his family were sold into servitude for a term of six years to pay their debt. This was not uncommon. The family was treated with great cruelty by their master. John passed away at the age of 46.By then there were ten children. The widowed mother was strong and kept the family together and reared them honorably.
