The name Hickernell had various spellings in old records, such as:
Heckernell, Hiccanal, Hickernal, Hygenell, Heckernall, Hickrynut and Hagenau. This book provides information concerning the history of the family and the descendants of David Hickernell of Penna. David's father was Francis Hickernell and he fought in the War of Polish Succession (1733-1735) David was born in the Rhine Valley, France, about 1745. He arrived in Philadelphia in October 1768 on the ship 'Pennsylvania Packet'. During the Revolutionary War David served as a corporal and private. After the war he and his family moved from Cocalico Township, Lancaster County, to Lisburn, Lower Allen Twp., Cumberland County, Penna. This book is about their son, David Francis, born in 1770 in Cocalico, Lancaster, PA. He remained in that area where lived and died. He married Catherin Schowald in 1792.
