HATFIELD: Hatfield Family History nd
by Roy, Ettamae and Bob Samplawski
The surname Hatfield had several apparently unrelated pioneers who came to America in Colonial days. They settled in New England, Virginia, New York, and later Kentucky and Ohio. Some of the most widely distributed of the name descended from Thomas Hatfied who was a soldier in New York City in 1665 (The Hatfields of West Chester) and Matthias who took the Oath of Fidelity in New Haven, CT in 1660 and became one of the patentees of Elizabethtown, New Jersey. Also known are the feuds with the McCoys. The family had a number of loyal adherents to the Crown during the Revolution, many of whom afterwards settled in Nova Scotia and other parts of eastern Canada.
