Read this fascinating account of the Hite family in America, as it is extracted from Some Prominent Virginia Families which is 4 vols. in 2, (1096+616p. 1907) starting at chapter XIII. In 1710, Hans Josh Heydt, or Yost Hite, as his name is spelled in English documents at the time of emigration, a native of Alsace, Germany. He came from Strasburg to New York with his wife, Anna Marie, nee du Bois, and their little girl, Mary. He came in his own two ships bringing at least sixteen Dutch and German families, to settle land. Later he is found in Germantown, PA on the Schuylkill River where he built mills. They are called Pennypacker's Mills. Due to indian raids on whites, and no protection from the indifferent government, they relocated to the Shenendoah Valley. Softcover.
