WASHINGTON: Memoirs of the Mother and Wife of Washington
by Margaret C Conkling. 1850
Mary Washington, the mother of George Washington, was married twice in her lifetime. Her first husband was Augustine Washington, with whom she had four children: Butler, Lawrence, Augustine, and Jane. Augustine Washington's father, John Washington, was a Colonel who married Anne Pope and had two sons, Lawrence and John, along with a daughter. John Washington was involved in military activities against the Indians and later became a prosperous planter in Virginia.
After Augustine Washington's death, Mary married George Gale, a widower with children of his own. However, this marriage was short-lived as George Gale passed away soon after. Mary Washington then focused on raising her children, particularly her eldest son George, who would go on to become the first President of the United States. Despite facing challenges and hardships, Mary Washington remained dedicated to her family and played a significant role in shaping the character and values of her children.
Mary Washington's lineage can be traced back to her ancestors, including her father Joseph Ball and her mother Mary Johnson. Joseph Ball was a successful planter and lawyer in Virginia, while Mary Johnson came from a prominent family. Mary Washington's family background and upbringing influenced her approach to motherhood and her commitment to instilling strong moral principles in her children.
